出生於英國倫敦南方 Lewisham，母親 Maggie Heyworth 是學校老師，父親 Peter Robert 是校長，父母目前定居法國 Vaudelnay，家中有一個姐姐 Natasha 是插畫藝術家，Jude 的名字是以披頭四樂隊名曲「 Hey Jude 」來命名。他在格林威治區的 Blackheath 長大，在 John Ball 小學、Kidbrooke 學校及 Alleyn's School 就讀。1987年開始在全國青少年音樂劇院演出，在 Edinburgh Fringe 得獎作品「 The Ragged Child 」( 衣衫襤褸的孩子 ) 中他飾演多個角色。

 

Sean Mathias 執導的悲喜劇「 Les Parents Terribles 」中的演出讓他獲得勞倫斯奧利佛最佳突破演出新人獎。1989年 Jude 得到他第一個電視角色，「 The Tailor Of Gloucester 」，改編自 Beatrix Potter 童書。Jude 從高中輟學，繼續在英國電視演出個劇集小角色，包括 ITV 製作的肥皂劇「 Families 」及 BFI/Channel 4 的「 The Crane」。1994年拍攝英國犯罪劇「 Shopping 」( 極度暴劫 ) 時遇到大他兩歲的 Sadie Frost，兩人於1997年結婚，但於2003年離婚。

 

1995年 Jude 回到百老匯參與「 Indiscretions 」演出，與 Kathleen Turner, Roger Rees 及 Cynthia Nixon 合作，此作品讓他得到東尼獎提名。1997年因為「 Wilde 」( 王爾德和他的情人 ) 一片受矚目，以 Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas 一角得到英國電影獎最有前途新人獎。同年在 Andrew Niccol 的科幻電影「 Gattaca 」( 千鈞一髮 ) 中，Jude  飾演一位前游泳明星，生活在痴迷於優生學的反烏托邦中。

 

在 Clint Eastwood 的「 Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil 」( 熱天午後慾望地帶 ) 中飾演被 Kevin Spacey 角色謀殺的性愛工作者。1998年 參與「 The Wisdom Of Crocodiles 」( 吸血情聖 ) 演出。1999年為了「 The Talented Mr. Ripley 」( 天才雷普利 ) 中的角色學習演奏薩克斯風，該角色提名了 BAFTA 最佳男配角，以備又金球獎與奧斯卡最佳男配角。2001年 在「 Enemy At The Gates 」( 大敵當前 ) 中飾演俄羅斯狙擊手 Vasily Zaytsev，也為了「 A.I. Artificial Intelligence 」( A.I. 人工智慧 ) 中的演出學習芭蕾舞。

 

2002年於30年代背景的「 Road To Perdition 」( 非法正義 ) 中飾演 Maguire 一角，2003年二度與 Anthony Minghella 合作「 Cold Mountain 」( 冷山)，並得到奧斯卡、金球獎與英國奧斯卡的最佳男主角提名。2004年與 Angelina Jolie 合作「 Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow 」( 明日世界 )，並在「 Alfie 」 ( 阿飛正傳 ) 中飾演主角，兩部都是向舊作致敬的翻拍。2006年與 Kate Winslet、Cameron Diaz 合作 Nancy Meyers 編導的「 The Holiday 」( 戀愛沒有假期 )，這一年 Jude 響應了 Robbie Williams 為聯合國兒童基金會募款的名人足球賽。2009年 Terry Gilliam 的作品「 The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus 」( 帕納大師的魔幻冒險 ) 中與 Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp 及 Colin Farrell 合作。

 

2009年5月 Jude 回到倫敦在 Wyndham's Theatre 演出莎士比亞哈姆雷特，8月到丹麥的 Elsinore Castle，9月到紐約 Broadhurst Theatre 巡演。2010年1月 Jude 得到 Critics' Circle Theatre Awards 的最佳莎士比亞演出獎殊榮。緊接著與 Forest Whitaker 合作黑暗科幻片「 Repo Men 」及 Guy Ritchie 重拍偵探電影「 Sherlock Holmes 」( 福爾摩斯 ) 與2011年續集「 A Gam Of Shadows 」，Jude 與 Robert Downey Jr. 及 Rachel McAdams 合作。2011年於 Steven Soderbergh 執導的驚悚片「 Contagion 」( 全境擴散 ) 中與 Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bryan Cranston, Kate Winslet 及 John Hawkes 等人合作。

 

2015年 Jude 在迷你劇集「The Young Pope 」中飾演一位保守的義大利裔美國紅衣主教，影集由 Rupert Murdoch 的 paybox Sky、法國 Canal Plus 及 HBO 共同製作，由奧斯卡得獎導演 Paolo Sorrentino 執導。2017年4月 Jude 宣布加入「 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald 」( 怪獸與葛林戴華的罪行 ) 中飾演年輕的 Albus Dumbledore。2018年開拍的動作驚悚片「 The Rhythm Section 」由 Reed Morano 執導，改編自 Mark Burnell 小說系列其一，Jude 在片中與 Blake Lively, Max Casella 及 Sterling K. Brown 合作。

 

2019年7月開拍由 Sky Studios 原創並與 HBO、Brad Pitt 的 Plan B 共同製作的迷你驚悚影集「 The Third Day 」共六集，預計於2020年首播，本劇由 Dennis Kelly 擔任主創及編劇，Marc Munden 執導。心理驚悚片「 The Nest 」則由 Sean Durkin 編導，Jude 片中與 Carrie Coon 合作，飾演企業家 Rory。另一部媲美「 大都會 」的史詩級巨片「 Megalopolis 」已經邀請了 Jude 及 Robert De Niro 及 Russell Crowe 等人加入，執導過「 教父 」、「 現代啟示錄 」等片的 Francis Ford Coppola 在2000年就完成劇本，因911事件而停擺，年近八十的柯波拉可望於今年開拍此片，也倍受影迷期待。
