被譽為梅莉史翠普的接班人,金牛座的凱特布蘭斯聰明但又多愁善感,她的父親是德州人,當他在墨爾本海軍服役時,和當老師的母親相遇.10歲時與她最親的父親因心臟病過世,留下母親和兄妹三人,雖然她畢業於墨爾本大學藝術歷史及經濟學系,但成績不佳,轉讀雪梨國立戲劇藝術學院,1992年畢業後,凱特藉由演出電視影集及舞台劇來充實自己,以"Kafka Dances"中的新娘角色贏得雪梨劇評獎的最佳新人.

同年又以大衛馬密的劇碼"Oleanna"中Carol的角色得到Rosemont最佳女主角獎.創下一人同年獲得兩項獎的紀錄.之後演出的"哈姆雷特"也再度獲得提名.而凱特在澳洲拍攝的ABC電視台黃金檔影集"Heartland"同樣也受到影評人的讚賞.1997年的電影處女作"火線浮生錄"讓凱特的演技有了更上一層樓的表現,同年,愛情喜劇"新娘向前衝"讓她再度獲得澳洲電影學院的最佳女配角."奧斯卡與露辛達"促成了她與雷夫范恩斯的一段戀情. 

不過之後凱特是與劇作家Andrew Upton結婚.1998年凱特在由印籍導演夏克哈卡伯執導的"伊莉莎白"中有完美的演技表現,據說"伊莉莎白"一片曾考慮過Madonna、 Betty Miller及Kate Winslet,不過凱特清新又帶些堅毅的外型讓她脫穎而出.但凱特也做了些犧牲,她必須漂白她的眉毛和睫毛,不過這部戲可為她贏得包括金球獎等九個重要影展的最佳女主角.不過卻在奧斯卡上輸給了葛妮絲派特洛,在同年她倆卻一起合作了"天才雷普利".
