出生於1995年英國漢普郡的 Alex 是家中三個小孩中最小的，父母從事法律工作，哥哥 Cameron Lawther 是電影製片人，姐姐 Ellie Lawther 從事公共政策事務工作。2009年 Alex 在 Petersfield 的丘吉爾學院參加戲劇俱樂部並編寫製作戲劇，在學校作品「 The Wind In The Willows 」中飾演 Ratty。
Alex 也在國家青年劇院接受過訓練。2010年他與哥哥一同創作了短片「 The Fear 」。2011年 16歲的他在 Chichester Festival Theatre 演出 David Hare 的「 South Downs 」( 南方丘陵 ) 劇碼中飾演 John Blakemore 作為他的首次專業演出。
2014年 Alex 參與 Morten Tyldum 執導的「 Imitation Game 」( 模仿遊戲 ) 飾演年輕的 Alan Turing，作為他的第一部大螢幕作品，並以此角色贏得 2015年倫敦電影評論家獎的「 年度英國最佳演員 」獎。同年在 BBC製作、Morgan Matthews 執導的「 X+Y 」( X+Y 愛的方程式 ) 中擔任配角。
2016年，在 Andrew Steggall 執導的處女作電影「 Departure 」( 離開你的我該怎麼辦 ) 中 Alex 首度飾演主要角色之一 Elliot，與飾演 Clément 的 Phénix Brossard 有令人深刻的演出。同年，在英國架空現實黑暗諷刺科幻影集「 Black Mirror 」( 黑鏡 ) 系列中的「 Shut Up And Dance 」一集中飾演 Kenny 一角。
2017年是 Alex 的一年，從 Simon Amstell 執導的「 Carnage: Swallowing The Past 」( 大屠殺：吞噬過去 )、Simon Curtis 執導的「 Goodbye Christopher Robin 」( 永遠的小熊維尼 ) 到 Trudie Styler 執導的 LGBT劇情片「 Freak Show 」( 花嬌男孩扮裝秀 )，各種不同類型的嘗試。
同年由 Jeremy Dyson, Andy Nyman 編導的英國恐怖驚悚電影「 Ghost Stories 」( 鬼故事 ) 中飾演 Simon Rifkind 一角， 電影根據 2010年同名舞台劇改編， Alex 與 Paul Whitehouse, Martin Freeman 共同演出。電影於2017年10月5日於倫敦電影節首映，並於2018年4月6日於英國上映。
2017年 Alex 與 Jessica Barden 一同加入英國 All 4 與 Netflix 共同製作的黑色喜劇影集「 The End of the F***ng World 」( 去x的世界末日 )，改編自 Charles Forsman 同名漫畫小說。影集在2018年入圍英國電影學院獎，第一季八集在2018年1月全球播映，第二季亦為八集，於2019年11月4日在台灣首播。
2018年 Alex 參與 Toby MacDonald 執導的「 Old Boy 」( 初戀手作中 )，與 Jonah Hauer-King, Pauline Etienne 及 Denis Ménochet 合作。另外在 Régis Roinsard 執導的懸疑推理電影「 Les traducteurs 」( 叛譯同謀 ) Alex 與烏克蘭女星 Olga Kurylenko 及丹麥女演員 Sidse Babett Knudsen 共同演出。
2019年宣布 Alex 加入 Wes Anderson 編導的作品「 The French Dispatch 」( 法蘭西快報 ) ，背景設定在20世紀一個虛構法國城市的美國報業的故事，是魏導繼「 大吉嶺有限公司 」「 歡迎來到布達佩斯 」及「 犬之島 」後再次和福斯探照燈合作。
Alex 將與 Frances McDormand, Benicio Del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Léa Seydoux, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss, Kate WInslet, Willem Dafoe 及 Christoph Waltz 等一班資深演員合作。
