1968 年出生於夏威夷 Honolulu 的 Timothy 兩歲時就搬到了加州 Modesto，他的父母 J.V. Bevan 與 Katherine Gideon 曾經在 Gallo 酒廠擔任副總裁。家中還有一個哥哥 Andrew 與弟弟 Matthew。在 Tim 年輕時父母就離婚了，兩人也都有再婚。Tim 有英國、德國、蘇格蘭、德國、愛爾蘭及八分之一的俄羅斯猶太血統。

Tim 是紐約 Vanderbilt 家族後裔，母親家族分別來自於1700年代航運鐵路美國工業家 Cornelius Vanderbilt 及1800年代的商人慈善家 William Henry Vanderbilt，家族亦靠著鐵路富有。曾曾祖母與曾祖母皆是紐約名媛 Emily Thorn Vanderbilt 與 Emily Vanderbilt Sloane。

Tim 的叔叔是音樂製作人 John Hammond，而 OIyphant 這姓氏來自於蘇格蘭，他父親的親戚就是蘇格蘭人 David Olyphant 博士，在美國獨立戰爭期間曾擔任南方醫院的院長。另外 David Olyphant 與曾曾祖父 Robert Morrison Olyphant 都是傑出的商人。

Tim 就讀於 Modesto 的 Fred C. Beyer 高中，長大後其實對於表演很害羞，卻非常喜歡藝術與畫畫，整個童年時期他記得都在參加游泳比賽，1986年國家隊200公尺個人混泳比賽入圍決賽，之後也被南加州大學 USC Trojans 游泳教練 Peter Daland 選進校隊。1990年以藝術學士學位畢業於南加大。

畢業後 Tim 全心全意考慮從事表演藝術相關職業，他決定搬到紐約，尋找其他選擇，最初半年他演出脫口秀喜劇，因為在大學最後一年曾經選修一場表演課，因此在紐約 William Esper Studio 完成為期兩年的表演計劃，並開始試鏡。
