Austin Butler 出生成長於美國加州橘郡，父母在他七歲時離婚，十三歲就會彈吉他，十六歲更自學鋼琴，家中有一位大他五歲的姐姐 Ashley，兩人曾在 Nickelodeon 頻道的實境節目「Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide」中參與演出。在節目中認識的一位 Lindsey Shaw 將 Austin 介紹給她的經紀人 Pat Cutler，與另一位 Jackie Lewis 一起經營他的演藝事業。

2007年5月 Austin 客串演出迪士尼頻道影集「Hannah Montana」(#孟漢娜)，同年9月也在「iCarly」劇中飾演單集主角 Jake Krandle。2008年 Austin 正式在「Zoey 101」第四季中擔任主角 James Garrett，與 Jamie Lynn Spears 合作演出。2009年7月與 Ashley Tisdale 合演福斯家庭冒險電影「Aliens In The Attic」，同時 Austin 也與他的好友 Alexa Vega 一同出演「Ruby & The Rockets」。

2010年 Ashley Tisdale 邀請他參與「Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure」( #夏培的星光大道) 試鏡，來自於同為迪士尼熱門影集「High School Musical」的延伸劇，片中飾演 Sharpay Evans 的戀愛對象，這部作品直接在2011年4月直接發行影音商品。2012年3月 Austin 加入 CW's「Sex And The City」( 慾望城市) 前傳影集「The Carrie Diaries」( #凱莉日記) ，飾演 Sebastian Kydd 一角。影集改編自 Candace Bushnell 同名小說，關注於 Carrie 1980年在紐約的生活。

2018年3月到7月，Austin 完成了自己首次百老匯演出，在「The Iceman Cometh」一劇中飾演 Don Parritt ( the 'lost boy') 一角，「紐約客」劇評給予 Austin 的表現極高好評。2019年除了在 Quentin arantino 的「#從前有個好萊塢」中飾演曼森家族成員 Tex Watson 外，也確定演出由 Baz Luhrmann 執導的「Elvis」( #貓王艾維斯 )，電影於2022年5月26日於坎城影展首映。
